Kitchen wrapping vs respray vs refacing vs replacing

If your kitchen is dated but the layout works, you have four real options, and only one of them is a full renovation. This is an honest comparison of wrapping, a 2-pack respray, door refacing and a full replacement, so you can see which suits your kitchen, your budget and your timeline before you spend anything.

The four options at a glance

OptionRelative costLongevityDisruptionBest for
Wrapping (architectural film)Lowest, from ~$2,40010-year warranty1–2 days, no demolitionSound carcasses; want a new look or finish fast and cleanly
2-pack resprayLow–midDurable, but can chip and needs a spray boothLonger; fumes; doors often sprayed off-siteSolid colour only, no texture or timber/stone look
Door refacing (new doors)Mid–highLongModerateYou want brand-new doors or a new profile; boxes are sound
Full replacementHighest, $15k+LongestWeeks, demolition, skip binChanging the layout, or the carcasses are beyond saving

Costs are indicative. Matera's 'from ~$2,400' is our real wrap starting point; the respray, refacing and replacement figures are general Melbourne market ranges, not Matera prices (we do wrapping and custom cabinetry, not 2-pack spraying).

Which one suits you?

  • Choose wrapping

when the boxes and benchtops are sound and you want a new timber, stone or colour look quickly, cheaply and with no mess.

  • Consider a respray

if you only want a different solid colour on the same doors and don't mind the fumes, lead time and chip risk. We don't offer this, but we'll say if it fits you.

  • Consider refacing

if you specifically want brand-new doors or a different door profile and the carcasses are sound.

  • Choose replacement

only if you're changing the layout or the carcasses are water-damaged or falling apart. That's where our custom cabinetry comes in.

Our honest take

For most tired-but-sound kitchens, wrapping gives the biggest visible change for the least money, mess and waste. When the kitchen genuinely needs rebuilding or re-planning, we'll steer you to custom cabinetry instead. We don't do 2-pack respray, so we've no reason to push you one way, we'd rather recommend what's right and keep the review.

Common questions

Is wrapping just vinyl stickers?
No. Architectural film is a real embossed finish with grain and texture pressed into it, rated for interior use, not a flat printed sticker. See our durability guide.
Is a respray more durable than a wrap?
Both are durable when done well. A respray can chip and show it; a quality wrap resists scratches and carries a ten year warranty. The bigger difference is that wrapping also gives you timber and stone looks, not just solid colour.
Can I mix options?
Yes. A common one is wrapping the cabinetry and benchtop and keeping your existing appliances, for a whole new kitchen at a fraction of a rebuild.
